Apollo Creed visits Fontana Dam

Apollo Creed finally had the chance to spend a bit of time at Fontana Dam. Fontana Dam is an awesomely massive 480-foot high hydroelectric dam which creates Fontana Lake. Fontana Dam is the tallest dam in the Eastern United States, and is quite an impressive structure.

Apollo unfortunately arrived when the visitor center was closed. A really cute park service gal told us a few interesting things, though. She says the dam was built back in 1944, and that the name ‘Fontana’ is Italian for fountain. She also talked about some sort of controversy regarding a road on the northern shore of Fontana Lake. Apparently, this has been subject of a long, drawn out debate, which seems to have finally taken care of when Heath Shuler was elected Congressmen. It sounds like now that the road will not be completed, which environmentalists in the area probably really appreciate. All Apollo knows is that he sure wouldn’t mind seeing this ‘road’ sometime…

Apollo really digs Fontana Dam! Here, he poses near the spillways and visitor center looking out towards the dam. This is definitely a place worth the slightly-out-of-the-way drive to see. The drive to Fontana is both beautiful and driver-friendly.

One of the perks of Fontana Dam has to be the lack of traffic. It’s very easy to walk out on the dam, and parents with kids will probably feel relatively safe doing so. Traffic does cross the dam, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. There’s a great picnic area and access to the Appalachian Trail on the other side. Here, Apollo stands on the dam looking out across Fontana Lake. The view is divine, and Apollo regrets not bringing kayaks.

Looking over the edge gives you quite a nice perspective of what 480 feet looks like. Apollo was attempted to strap himself to a styrofoam glider and go for a little flight. Perhaps next time.

Apollo really hopes you’ll consider checking out Fontana Dam. For more information on Fontana Dam and the neighboring Fontana Village, check out Apollo’s Fontana Guidebook here.
