Apollo at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
Everyone that visits Flat Rock, NC makes a huge deal about two things: the Flat Rock Playhouse and the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Everything else is just… I don’t even know, nobody ever talks about it. Apollo is a big fan of Carl Sandburg. The dude had a hell of a life, a hell of a wife, and a hell of a house. But what really intrigued Apollo was Carl Sandburg’s neighbors. Nobody ever talks about them or gives them any credit. What the hell did they ever do? Surely they gave him some pointers along the way or took a wiz skinny dipping in his pond. They had to do something.
Apollo Creed visits Carl Sandburg & his Neighbors

This is what Carl Sandburg’s neighbors got to see everyday. One of Carl Sandburgs neighbors once said, “Carl Sandburg must be an idealist. I don’t know where he’s going, but he’s probably on his way.”

Former lawn chair of one of Carl Sandburg’s neighbors mysteriously wound up in Carl Sandburg’s huge ass backyard.

Apollo wonders how much of an inspiration this tree had on Carl Sandburg. I mean it looks just like…

“There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud.” This is what Apollo was thinking as he sits and pees in Carl Sandburg’s pond.

Who should visit
Carl Sandburg’s house is pretty sweet, and would make a great several hour excursion that is well suited for families. Apollo thinks that kids won’t really ‘get’ the whole thing, and its probably best suited to the older folks who can appreciate Mr. Sandburg’s amazing life. While Apollo was visiting, most of the people there were of the older crowd and generally had white hair on their heads. The various trails are mild, and easy walking.
